Engineering Manager

We are looking for a highly motivated and talented Engineering Manager to oversee our R&D center. The ideal candidate must be self-driven, hardworking, and have a deep understanding of high-performance combustion engines. You must be a strong leader with the drive to continually improve. We are a medium size business with a small, family-owned feel, operating in the western suburbs of Chicago. We are growing rapidly and are looking for talented people to join our team. Responsibilities

  • Manages and oversees all Engineering and Research & Development team members and projects
  • Plans and coordinates all development / new product manufacturing activities with department directors and executes company objectives set by company leadership
  • Sets project and design metrics including budget plans and timelines
  • Creates and establishes engineering protocols that are followed by all involved with product development process
  • Evaluates project cost and metrics throughout the development process to determine project investment viability. Adjusts project to meet financial needs and goals
  • Responsible for reviewing all manufactured product, part numbering, and BOMs for correctness and accuracy
  • Periodically review BOMs for accuracy and cost saving revisions through product life cycles
  • Oversees new product manufacturing to ensure all required support, tools, and information is provided and teams are trained with the parts they are assembling
  • Manages current products throughout life cycle for revisions, updates, resourcing due to cost / supply chain issues and Engineering Change Orders. Manages technical quality / failure issues, determines, and executes best course of action with department directors
  • Ensures projects meet set timelines with the Development Team and other departments involved in the new product manufacturing process (marketing, sales, etc.)
  • Identifies, implements, and oversees new manufacturing techniques / processes for continued long term growth. Analyzes needs of new product manufacturing and current products to either reduce time or cost
  • Design parts and assemblies in CAD, create drawings for manufacturing
  • Thorough documentation of project development using tools such as Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Coordinate with vendors for parts quoting, problem solving, and manufacturing related communications
  • Oversees design validation by testing and utilizing various techniques including, 3D printing, prototype manufacturing, analytical calculations, and simulations with Development Team
  • Have an up to date current knowledge of the automotive and automotive performance industry. Direct involvement in performance a plus.
  • Must be comfortable within a rapid development environment; able to support the Development Team to execute within short timelines and a given budget. Attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, ability to multitask, good organizational skills, computer literacy, and a demonstrated ability to thrive in a team environment

Management

  • Review ongoing performance results and identifies needs of employees
  • Implement coaching or mentoring partnerships as appropriate
  • Communicate clearly, directly and respectfully with employees concerning performance expectations, productivity, and accountability
  • Propose and implement department improvements and resolve issues within the department
  • Work with COO to establish metrics that measure the effectiveness of your department

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience of hands-on mechanical engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years of management experience.
  • Automotive engineering or automotive mechanical hands-on experience required
  • Experience managing product development process from inception to production required
  • Experience working in a small business or high growth environment preferred
  • Demonstrated ability of working on significant mechanical designs
  • Demonstrated ability to manage many projects of various sizes and stages required

Qualifications and/or Requirements

  • Ability to lead and mentor the R&D team
  • Passion for motorsports a must
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related field
  • Proficiency with Solidworks
  • Experience with DFM, GD&T, and standard measurement tools
  • Understanding of automotive mechanical systems
  • Experience with manufacturing required
  • Experience with machining, fabrication, and welding a plus
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment a plus
  • Ability to perform mechanical work on cars a plus (i.e. build, install, and test fit parts)
  • Infrequent travel required (less than 10%)
